Badge Workshops
Scouts can work towards earning a badge through a two-hour naturalist guided program at Plains Center. Badge workshops are offered for:
Girl Scout Junior Naturalist Badge: “Get Moving”
How important is energy to you? Do prairie dogs need it? Learn about the energy cycle, investigate a prairie dog colony and explore a western harvester ant mound in search of how things use energy. We will also find ways to reduce our own carbon footprint. (Ages 9 - 11)
Girl Scout Brownies Ecology Badge: “Wonders of Water”
What is so wonderful about water? Get involved in water testing, collecting water bugs and come away with a better appreciation of how precious this clear liquid is to every living thing. (2nd - 3rd grade)
Girl Scout Daisies Ecology Badge: “Between Earth and Sky”
Why is it important to protect natural places and the things that live in it? Join us as we learn about the lives of the busy bee and other important critters of the prairie. You will also participate in reducing the invasive weeds in our natural area. (Ages 5 - 7)
Tiger Cub Boy Scouts “Leave No Trace Badge”
Take a hike with us to learn about the policy of “Leave No Trace” and how to put it to use when we are out exploring our natural world. (1st grade or age 7)
Webelos Naturalist Badge
Do you know what a Naturalist does? Learn about the food chain, identify poisonous plants and venomous animals, and observe prairie dog behaviors and become a prairie naturalist. (Ages 10 - 11)
Cub Scout Conservation Award Badge
What does it mean to “think globally and act locally”? Learn what that means by participating in weather observations and prairie explorations to help us take care of our mother earth. (Ages 7 - 11 ½)

Important Information for Booking Programs
1) What is your refund & cancellation policy?
If you cancel 30 days or more in advance of the program date, half of your deposit is refunded. If you cancel less than 30 days before the program date, your deposit is non-refundable.
2) Can I request a scout program on a date that is not listed?
Yes! Please call with your requests at least 4 weeks in advance or earlier if possible. Special requests are handled on a case by case basis and dependent upon the availability of our facility and staff. Please keep in mind that during the summer months, our program calendar can fill up months in advance!
For Overnights:
3) How early can we arrive for an overnight program? Can we eat dinner there?
The gate will open at 5:30pm and the overnight program will begin at 6:30pm. There are picnic shelters available if you would like to bring a picnic meal and eat between 5:30pm and 6:30pm. Keep in mind that we do NOT allow food in the tipis because we do not want to attract wildlife or rodents. Food needs to be stored in your vehicles overnight.
4) What happens if we are sleeping in the tipis and we see lightening or have inclement weather?
One of our trained staff will stay on site with your group overnight. In case of bad weather or lightening, the staff person will have everyone move indoors (into the yurt and / or Visitor Center) to sleep.
5) What is it like sleeping in a tipi?
Sleeping in a tipi is much like sleeping in a tent. There is a ground cover and tarp laid down so you are not sleeping on bare ground. Each tipi has room for up to 15 people.
6) What should I pack?
Please download our recommended packing list and share with your group.
7) Can I book a badge workshop and overnight program together?
Yes, you can request a badge workshop from 3:30pm - 5:30pm the evening of your overnight or from 9am - 11am the following morning. Please make your request at least 4 weeks in advance.
